About me

  • Retired in 2001 from senior management roles in corporate telecommunications. Then spent 18 years as Senior Air Traffic Engineer at my local airport.

  • Happily resident in the Eden Valley, Cumbria, north-west England since 2001.

  • Radio amateur for more than 55 years. Almost 100% CW operator. DXer, DXpeditioner and occasional contester. Mainly operating on HF/6m but recently returned to 2m, where there isn't much activity, CW or otherwise!

  • Founder and President of the Summits on the Air (SOTA) programme for radio amateurs worldwide.

  • Keen hillwalker and, in my younger days, rock climber, competition hiker, caver and occasional orienteer.

  • Builder and former pilot of two seat light aircraft G-JONL, built in 2010.
PPL, IR(R) and night certifications since 2005. Logged in excess of 1000 hours total flying time. Recently retired.

  • Keen designer and builder of electronics and software projects, with especial interest in hybrid hardware/software solutions.

  • Lover of classical music and a committee member of Penrith Music Club.

  • Aspiring organist with home-built Hauptwerk 3-manual+pedals organ and access to several local pipe organs.

  • Former Venture Scout Leader and Air Cadet Instructor.
